Overview

The Brunswick School Nutrition staff understands the importance healthy meals have on a student’s ability to learn and their overall success and wellbeing in school. We strive to use the highest quality and nutrient rich ingredients as possible in all the food we prepare. Meals are prepared with care, using fresh, local ingredients as much as possible.

MEAL PROGRAMS

Brunswick Schools provide a Breakfast and Lunch to all enrolled students on days they are present at no charge. They may visit their school cafeteria at designated times and make a selection from the menu and then proceed to our registers to have their complementary meal recorded (to ensure one breakfast and lunch per student/per day).

A meal can only be credited as "at no cost" if it contains all of the USDA required components.

  • Breakfast: Grain, Fruit

  • Lunch: Grain, Protein, Fruit and/or Vegetable.
*Milk is available at all meals and is not required to qualify as a meal

Students PK-8 will be guided to meet all the requirements before leaving the register. High School Students (grades 9-12) may get extra potions if available, choose items not part of the offerings in our A-la-carte (ice cream, drinks, cookies, snacks), or individual items part of the lunch program and opt-out of getting a qualifying meal and charge to their lunch fund accounts (mySchoolBucks) or use cash at our registers.

PK-8, Meals must be consumed in the designated lunch areas and times ...food may not be claimed for later.

Milk, 1 carton of milk is complementary with each meal.

  • Elementary Students that bring lunches may get a milk to go with their lunch at no charge.

  • Middle- and High- School students may buy a milk or extra cartons using lunch funds or cash.

Free and Reduced Applications, The at no charge meals program is part of Maine law established in the summer of 2021 (Title 20-A, Section 6602).

An evaluation of or Nutrition program happens on a 5 year rotation. At the time of a review year (School Year 2022-23), families will be asked to complete the USDA Free and Reduced Benefits Application. Despite that each student receives a meal at no charge- completion of this voluntary application program ensures we continue to support a food-for-all-mentality, secure additional academic funding related to our local populous, and provide families with other household benefits.

The next evaluation period should be slated for the summer/fall of 2026. Until then, no Free & Reduced benefits application will be required. The Department of Education and Brunswick Schools will still report this data but it will be collected in an Economic module part of your students PowerSchool application.

DISCLAIMER: Diets and Allergies

The Brunswick School Department offers a choice of healthy meals each school day.
All meals served must meet nutrition standards established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. If a child has a disability, as determined by a doctor, and the disability prevents the child from eating the regular school meal, the school will make substitutions prescribed by a doctor. If a substitution is needed, there will be no extra charge for the meal. Please note, however, that the school is not required to make a substitution for a food allergy, unless it meets the definition of disability. Please call the school for further information.
